About Us

The Global Health and Security Initiative is working around the world to address the complex and multifaceted threat posed by biological agents. Infectious disease threats can emerge from many sources, afflicting humans and animals, or threatening the food and water supply. The biological threat—whether from natural disease epidemics, the intentional use of pathogens for harm, or the inadvertent release from a laboratory mishap —is a real and growing concern and challenges traditional ways of thinking about prevention, deterrence and response. Responding to this threat requires us to think anew about how to define and implement enduring solutions.

The Global Health and Security Initiative seeks to raise awareness and leverage direct action through innovative partnerships and creative approaches to reducing these threats. A more secure world demands that we urgently address gaps in our global public health capacity for rapid detection and response, as well as strengthening efforts to prevent the development and use of biological weapons.

The two goals of our initiative are to:

  • Improve the global capacity for the prevention of and preparedness for biological threats through enhanced disease surveillance, early detection and response.
  • Promote the safe and secure practice of the biomedical sciences by safeguarding access to dangerous pathogens and preventing the misuse of technology and information.

Mission Approach and Funding Philosophy

NTI's Global Health and Security Initiative advocates threat reduction solutions, raises public awareness, and undertakes direct action projects that demonstrate innovative ways to reduce threats.

The majority of the Global Health and Security Initiative's awards support operational activities that it has a strong hand in developing.  While there is no formal award-making cycle, the Global Health and Security Initiative will consider unsolicited projects that:

  • Address significant high-risk situations;
  • Generate additional funding and leverage action for threat reduction; or otherwise
  • Promote the core objectives of the Global Health and Security Initiative.

All of the Global Health and Security Initiative's activities are conducted with full transparency with governments.
